What are USP Grade Chemicals?

When it comes to classifying chemicals, there are seven main categories that chemists tend to use. One of these is what chemists call United States Pharmacopeia grade chemicals, or USP grade chemicals for short. But what does this mean?

In this blog post, we’ll take a brief look at the different chemical classifications, discuss what a USP grade chemical is, and where they are available to buy.

The Seven Classifications

The main categories that chemists categorize substances in are based on their level of chemical purity, what their intended use is, and a few other characteristics. Here are the names of the top categories:

  1. ACS
  2. Reagent
  3. USP
  4. NF
  5. Laboratory
  6. Purified
  7. Technical

In order for a chemical to fall under the USP category, the substance must meet the standards of the United States Pharmacopeia. This scientific organization implements regulations to create safer and healthier medicine, supplements, and food for patients. For the organization to categorize a substance under this category, then it has to meet the criteria the US Pharmacopeia has implemented, and in turn, will be considered a food-grade substance and have the organization’s stamp of approval.
